If Knowledge is the Problem . . .

I rarely see this said outright.

"You can educate yourself right out of a relationship with God."
It would make one wonder if you had a relationship with God to begin with.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste..a soul is worse.

How? How can you educate yourself out of a true relationship with the Creator? Really? How can truth and knowledge be a bad thing?

Look, suppose you're in love with someone and the more you learn about them, the less you like them. Does that mean the knowledge was the bad thing, or the relationship was the bad thing? Would you encourage someone to remain as ignorant as possible in that situation simply to preserve their relationship?

Of course you wouldn't. If knowledge of evolution, of physics, of radiometric dating, of history, of anything, destroys your faith, the problem isn't knowledge.

    Isn't that called marriage?

    OK, I'm sorry for the cheap joke.

  4. It's strange to hear a religious person admit outright that education and reason drive people away from religion.
    Could this be why so many Xians homeschool their kids-- so that they can ensure the poor kids won't learn anything?

  5. Sarah;

    over on the site No Longer Qivering [mispelling deliberate, because the creator says "there's no YOU in Quivering" - and i ♥ the pun] many ex-Quiverful parents say that it *IS* a huge reason to homeschool. not always explicitly - some say "we didn't want our kids exposed to things we considered lies and herasy, like evolution" some say "we didn't want our kids exposed to "The World" and it's evils and confusions" and some say "we KNEW evolution was a LIE, bcuz it's not in the Bible, and we knew schools would not only teach it, but teach it better than we taught the Bible. so we didn't risk it"

    wheras *I* would homeschool to make sure my kids [if i could have them] got REAL education; evolution and biology and sex ed and calculus and physics and grammar and literacy and HISTORICAL ACCURACY [it fucking SUCKS to be the only Injun in the class when "Custer's Last Stand" comes up, and have all the kids hate you because "your people" [who are NOT my people] killed Custer - and when you try to explain that he was practicing GENOCIDE, for fuck's sake, the teacher steps in and glosses over all the crimes committed against Native Americans and says "White people just wanted to "civilize" and bring REAL religion to the indigent population". *RAGE*].

    religion i've already covered, when i was the PIC of my niece - we covered every. single. religion. i could get info on. she has, at 14, apparantly decided to be Christian [with science. she believes God created the universe too many billions of years ago to count, and that he created the earth several billion years ago, then caused it to evolve. :) ]
    if i ever adopt, i'll do the same thing.

  6. I think there was some Pauline admonition to disregard the intellect if it clashed with belief, and the early "church fathers" had a down on it as well.

    There is even the one who acknowledged the absurdity, infact he said that's WHY he believed it. That's real faith, that is, and I've seen any number of people nod their heads in agreement when this is cited.

    These seem to be the same people who think living in John Calvin's Geneva is about as close to paradise as you can get on earth.
