Like I'm Shocked that Palin is a Poor Tipper

This says the most to me about Sarah Palin:

Palin does not always treat those ordinary people well, however—it depends on who is watching. Of the many famous people who have stayed at the Hyatt in Wichita (Cher, Reba McEntire, Neil Young), Sarah Palin ranks as the all-time worst tipper: $5 for seven bags. But the bellhops had it good in Kansas, compared with the bellman at another midwestern hotel who waited up until past midnight for Palin and her entourage to check in—and then got no tip at all for 10 bags. He was stiffed again at checkout time. The same went for the maids who cleaned Palin’s rooms in both places—no tip whatsoever.

All those common people Sarah cares for so much and she can't spare $20 of the $32,000,000 she made this past year?

Sarah, you make me sick.

  1. Since she is a disgusting excuse for a human being, it's not at all surprising she's a bad tipper. She's pretty much a bad everything.

  2. I'm sorry. I just cannot think of anything moderate, much less good, to say about Sarah Palin.

  3. It does not surprise me, this intelligence about Palin. I am surprised she is not advocating slavery as a means of not having to tip at all.

That said, I find the American obsession with tipping weird - and once led me to a full scale argument at a restaurant in N.Y..

Why aren't people just paid a decent, basic wage and so tipping then just becomes a nominal extra rather than a necessity? I suppose it is a means of keeping inflation and the price of services down - but also ensures your waiter, bell hop, taxi driver etc. will do as they're supposed to do and be irritatingly obsequious into the bargain!

That aside, I just hope Palin's career comes to a sticky end before the next Presidential election...

    Regards:

    S.

  4. I really think she's just trying to prove to the conservatives that their profound belief that people shouldn't receive a handout is her agenda as well. Those bellhops get a salary don't they? Well, there you go. They don't need tips. I just don't know what you're going on and on about PF. If they were more deserving they'd have better jobs.

Really, what everybody else said. But you know, I'd be amazed if she would run for office again. She's making so much money this way. But you never know... since she has so many misinterpretations of government and the way it works, maybe she thinks she can still do all this public speaking stuff for pay while president.

Wouldn't surprise me. Hey, it would be her First Amendment right, right?

    *chortle*

  5. Ah, Europe, where waiters and other service industry personnel don't have to rely upon the kindness of strangers.

I doesn't really keep the cost of a meal down to pay the waitress 1/3 minimum wage and make the customer responsible for the rest of her earnings. Well, it does if the customer is an asshole who doesn't tip properly. Otherwise, you simply assume dinner will cost x + x(.25), i.e., the real cost of the meal.

  6. It comes from leading a life of privilege and never having to live off of tips yourself. Typical Republican.

  8. Fundamentalist Christians are some of the worst tippers, ask any waiter or waitress that has to work Sundays.

  9. When I was a waitress I studiously avoided Sundays - or at least Sunday lunches. Wednesday dinner was never great, either. BeamStalk speaks the truth.

  10. My in-laws, severe Baptists, used to tip a dollar or two if we all went out to Sunday brunch. I used to figure the bill in my head, and make sure I was the last to leave the table, so I could slip 15% under the edge of my plate.
She saw me do it once, and her comments included "Don't do that. If they were "nice" women they'd have real jobs!" So after that my rate went to 20%, just for putting up with her crap.

  11. Mutzali, believe me, your efforts were appreciated. I have tipped my waitress $20 over a generous tip when I realized that another table had stiffed them. My MIL raised four children on her tips as a waitress after her husband died and it makes me so angry when people won't do the right thing and pay someone for their work.

  12. I'm just glad I learned about the whole tipping culture prior to visiting America. It means I'll know what to do should I ever visit.

Here in Australia, waiters and waitresses literally race each other to be the first one to serve anyone with an american accent. Not because they need to: they're paid minimum wage or above and don't technically need tips, but money is money.

  13. there's one place even WORSE for standard tips than sunday lunches -

    churches themselves.

i've delivered pizza, off and on, for 15 years. and, as soon as i able at ANY place i work [well, when i could work] i'd refuse all the church deliveries.

i once, on CHRISTMAS EVE, in a freaking BLIZZARD [for Ohio] that had caused the roads to be closed except for emergency personel, delivered $200 of pizza to a church. in 3 feet of snow. with ZERO help getting it inside - in fact, the asshole bitched because i couldn't carry 35 fucking pizzas at ONCE. and wouldn't open the door for me, saying "you're the delivery driver, it's YOUR job"
and then gave me a dollar.

    a sole, single, solitary dollar.

i looked at it a moment, looked at the minister, and said "what's this?"

he said "it's your tip - you drivers insist on tips to do your job, right?"

i made a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig show of looking around. the minister was getting angry by the time i stopped rubber necking, and said "Funny, i thought i was in a Christian Church!"
    "You ARE!"

"wait, you're telling me that a Christian Church, on Christmas Eve, during a blizzard that i DROVE and then WALKED THROUGH, risking a ticket or arrest!, doesn't know that delivery drivers make MINIMUM WAGE and rely on tips to keep gas and oil in their cars? and can't give me more than a single dollar for a 200 dollar order? no, God-man, if you can only afford to tip me a dollar, OBVIOUSLY you need that dollar more than i do. i'm SURE that i can handle the FROSTBITE on my toes, that i got because YOU not only refused to open the door when i was carrying YOUR pizza, but prevented the others who WANTED to help from opening the door, i'll be FINE without your dollar. and i really, really hope your God ISN'T Omniscient, know why?"
he starts to lecture, i whip my hand up, and yelled "KNOW WHY?!"
    "Fine, bitch, WHY?"
[his entire congregation is crowding behind him, watching the drama] "Because if your God saw how you were treating me, right now, on Christmas is in YOUR church, bringing you your pizza order at NO ADDITIONAL COST even though it was SUPPOSED to be a pick up because we aren't supposed to be DRIVING in this storm, you'd have ZERO chance of going to heaven. and i don't want to spend an eternity with you!"

the rest of the congregation got together, as i was re-forging my way back to my car [seriously, in ten minutes it snowed over 6 inches] and brought me over $100. the woman who gave it to me was crying, really really worried that i DID have frost bite, she was a nurse and wanted to check... and i felt like an ass for a bit, because i wasn't trying to get a large tip [or any tip at all], i really just wanted that asshole minister to STOP treating me like shit when i did all that to bring him fucking pizza...
they called my boss, too, and told her that the minister had verbally attacked me, and would be calling to complain because i defended myself - they called and lied to my boss so i wouldn't lose my job for starting a fight with THEIR MINISTER.

they got a new minister, who STILL didn't tip, but at least he never acted like the OLD minister - the new guy would order pizza, then go WAIT OUTSIDE for it, with a number of teen guys, to carry it in. worth not getting a tip, at that point - he was nice, he never once tried to make me carry 10+ pizzas at the same time, never pulled any of the crap of the old minister. my last day at that place, after i turned in my uniform, i stopped by the church and explained to the new minister WHY he should tip his delivery driver. and wait-staff. etc.

he REALLY THOUGHT that delivery drivers made $14+/hour, and so did wait-staff. i explained how the real world worked, and he not only started tipping, but i heard he gave a sermon about how tipping was something Jesus would want! so that was awesome...

  14. Oh man... that, right there, is a thing of beauty. Bravo Denelian, bravo.

I'm glad to hear that the congregation and the new minister were decent people. Somewhere deep inside my shriveled, black atheist heart, full of cynisism and rage and godless bile, there's a tiny spark of optimism I haven;t managed to crush yet, that keeps trying to tell me that the silent majority, no matter their views or their sanity, are really decent, nice people at heart. And it likes to be proven right.

  15. I'll second Quasar: great story, and good for you, denelian.

I did have a job once on Sundays, and I got some good tips. But I was playing clarinet in a ragtime band for the Sunday brunch of a gay nightclub in North Beach, so it might not have been your typical churchgoing crowd.
