Concerning Orcs . . .

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Thank you, Kung Fu Monkey!

  1. Dear Lord, yes. I just finished reading Atlas Shrugged, and I'll take Orcs any day. Real Orcs, with stabby spears and swords, who want to put me in a stew pot and eat me.

  4. DM- did you read Atlas Shrugged as a fourteen-year-old? Just askin'.

  5. That is hysterical.

I tried to read the Hobbit as a young teen, but I gave up before 100 pages because the writing style was tedious and nothing had happened yet. I'm told Ayn Rand's novels are even more boring, though I haven't attempted them myself.

  6. It's especially interesting to know that Alan Greenspan was a member of Ayn Rand's circle of intimate friends.

  7. After I waded through the entire Koran, I tried to read Atlas Shrugged, but I couldn't finish it.
I was physically incapable of reading that book. (and I'd already read The Fountainhead)

  8. Apologies for mispelling "xkcd"

  9. I hope everyone here won't despise me when I admit that I actually enjoy Atlas Shrugged. I also liked Anthem.

Do I skim the hell out of the redundant, verbose passages in Atlas? Hellll yeah. Do I think the heros in it are actually human beings to be emulated in the real world? Hellll no. I just find it an interesting story.

  10. Cynical: yeah, I must admit to liking Atlas Shrugged, and Fountainhead and Anthem too. They're pretty good adventure stories of the old school, but with women being heroes as well as men. Rand's worship of the powerful personality, and her rather naive faith in free enterprise's ability to produce good society, make them bad political models, however, to say the least.

  11. @CN - I just finished Atlas Shrugged. (I somehow managed not to read it in my youth.) And you're right, despite its flaws it's actually quite entertaining. I'm a little appalled that anyone takes it seriously as a work of political philosophy when it's so clearly a fantasy novel, but that's a topic for an upcoming blog post...
