Please Do Not Sticky Note Businesses

Look, I know this probably seems funny to some people, but please don't join the sticky notes campaign:

This campaign was started by a FACEBOOK group [The 'Hope and Change' Sticky Note Campaign (Until Jan. 20th, 2013)] and it has the potential to be huge. The idea here is to write “How’s That Hope and Change Working Out For You?” and leave the notes everywhere that people will be feeling the devastating effects of Obama policy.

Gas station pumps are a very important and strategic place. (But don’t do anything to impede the next customer’s ability to use that service – like putting it over the digital read-out window. This is meant to be an eye-opener, not vandalism or pain-in-the-ass (ism).

Look, whether you block the digital read out window or not, you are causing extra work for some poor person making minimum wage. I'm not going to post all the other pictures of this that I have seen, but people are putting them all over grocery stores, as well. Guess what that's going to do? If you've ever worked at a grocery store or any other business you already know: some poor person making minimum wage is going to have to remove all those sticky notes. Keep in mind, it's a business, not your personal property that you can sticky note to your heart's content. So some person is going to have to look all over the store to remove these stupid notes. Half those notes are going to end up on the ground- any office worker can tell you sticky notes don't really stick all that well- now becoming litter some poor person is going to have to bend over to pick up.

I am an office worker, and among my real life friends and acquaintances that makes me high class- precisely because I don't have to clean up after the public all day. I hear the complaints all the time: receipts and food wrappers left everywhere for my friends to pick up. They're overworked and underpaid to begin with and now some asshats think they're being clever by making even more work for my friends.

You know what? Do it. Leave your little sticky notes everywhere. I'm sure it won't take long before an army of cashiers and stock persons decide to vote Obama just to say fuck you to the sticky noters.

Assholes.

And Then It Hit Me

Needless to say (really, I'm only saying this for the furreners who follow my blog), the lawyers at this firm are hardcore Republicans*. Because of its positioning, my cubical is the automatic meeting place of the office. (Why yes, I do find this endlessly annoying.) So all day long I get to here Republican rants about welfare queens and Obama care and socialism and Obamunists and the END OF THE WORLD!!1!!eleventy!!

Don't kid yourself, even mainstream Republican ideology is disturbingly tea-flavored these days.

Anyway, today I got to hear uberChristian, car dealership owning, estate management of counsel** say that he had advised his teenage daughters to move to Australia, because "that's the only chance they'll have with what Obama is doing to this country."

I actually opened my mouth to ask him why, if he was so damn serious about this, he didn't pick up and move to Australia*** himself, and then it hit me.

He isn't worried about what Obama is doing to this country. Obama isn't really doing much at all. What of counsel is worried about is what he and his Republican brethren have done, and continue to do, to this country. They deregulated everything they could and gave us the Almost Depression and food recalls and jobs overseas. They lowered taxes on themselves and their buddies and now we have a deficit you have to use scientific notation to calculate. They started two wars "for freedom" or some fucking thing and propped up dictators around the world- dictators that are now losing power and that doesn't look good for us, now does it?

Now they're defunding Planned Parenthood, because who needs pap smears or breasts exams, and trying to turn miscarriages into crime scenes.

If I were him, I wouldn't want my daughters living in the world I helped create either. Of course, of counsel doesn't want to leave, he's not a woman and he's already got all his wealth, but his daughters, yeah, halfway around the world probably isn't far enough away.

*With the notable exception being the associate who didn't even start law school until 40, because that's how long it took him to save up the money waiting tables. He's as socialist as you can be and still be a lawyer who helps banks foreclose on people's homes. People are weird.

**I don't really know what "of counsel" means. He's on the letterhead, but he doesn't report to the partners, he has his own staff and he pays rent for the offices he uses, but he uses the same phone system . . . I dunno.

***I desperately want to visit Australia. I have internet friends there, my grandfather wanted to move there he loved it so much, but . . . spiders. Spiders big enough to pack Uzis, not that they need to. They're probably looking in my direction right now. While eating a horse.

This Says More About You

I keep a lot of right wing blogs in my reader and a few days ago I starting seeing posts comparing and contrasting President Obama on a bike to former presidents on bikes and horses.

This is manly, reassuringly so.

I couldn't figure it out. Why are former President Bush's pasty thighs "reassuringly manly"? Why is President Obama not manly, reassuringly or otherwise? I, personally, can't see a difference between the two pictures. To me, that looks like "guy on a bike" and "another guy on a bike".

Then I remembered something. You see, I don't think that the blogger responsible for "reassuringly manly" is a raving white supremacist. I don't even think that most teabaggers have Nazi flags hanging in their living rooms. In fact, I think most of these people would be quite indignant at the thought, and not fake indignant, either. Honestly indignant.

The thing that I remembered? Unconscious Racial Bias.

committed to egalitarianism, and deliberately work to behave without prejudice,
yet still possess hidden negative prejudices or stereotypes.

In other words, while you may be committed to a racially neutral worldview, you automatically view a white man as manlier, more presidential and all around better than a black man. So when you see those two pictures, which are virtually identical, you identify former President Bush as "reassuringly manly" and President Obama as embarrassing.

This says nothing about President Obama, but it does say a whole lot about you. Unfortunately.

Nothing About Obama Pleases These People

This has to be the weirdest complaint about Obama I have heard yet.

Look at Nick Clegg in the photo [above]. Have you noticed how men’s suit jackets today open too soon below the button, revealing the lower part of the tie instead of covering it? Obama introduced that look. Now it’s everywhere. I’m the only person I know who has noticed it. Do have any thoughts about what it signifies, culturally speaking?

In my view, it subverts the very idea of a suit, which is that it covers the man.

Now, mind you, we're talking about the bottom button being unbuttoned while the top button remains buttoned so that the wearer can sit down and stand up easily. also, the part of the man that is uncovered? nothing. he's still got a shirt on, and likely an undershirt as well.

These people are fucking insane.

The Meek Can Have It When the Bold Are Done With It

This article is a mess o' whinging about the National Day of Prayer and Obama and liberals, but what's interesting is how very specifically, the writer makes my point for me about religion in the US. It's too wrapped up in politics, it's too powerful in making policy and what truly makes these people angry isn't a loss of prayer- they can pray any damn time they want- it's a loss of power.

Perhaps the blame for this change in the political atmosphere should be laid at the feet of the current administration and it’s concept of pluralism. After all, the president boldly declared last year that the U.S. was no longer a Christian nation. This remark infuriated the faithful and set the stage for millions of rank and file Christians to question his personal faith. Next, he did not attend the National Day of Prayer and refused to make a declaration or statement until late in the day last year. Conservative Christian powerbrokers watched tentatively as the administration attempted to bring new leaders into the president’s advisory circle. These new leaders had no real national cache’ with the Christian masses. Despite the fact that the president attended a Congressional prayer breakfast earlier this year, his approach seems to have been aimed at “defanging” the politically powerful, religious right. [emphasis added]

Conservative Christian powerbrokers. Politically powerful religious right. Yeah, well, that's honest, but stop snarling at me about morals and values and faith. You had power, you like power, you've lost power and you're mad. The meek shall inherit what, now?

What Obama's Done Wrong

Did you ever listen to someone go on about a person they have an irrational hatred for- a coworker, acquaintance, musician, celebrity- and while they can't think of one nice thing to say about the individual, they also can't come up with one specific flaw or bad act, either? You're left with the opinion that either the hatred is completely irrational, or the hater doesn't want to admit what it is they really hate about the person, i.e., race, sexual orientation, etc.

That's what it's like when wingnuts try to describe their hatred of Obama. (Note: this is what real people who vote actually think about Obama. It's frightening.)

Describe what Obama is doing wrong

I perceive a very negative opinion of Obama on this board. I'm not American and I don't know much about politics, but I was in the midst of a pro-Obama discussion between some Christians and had the nerve to speak up with an alternative viewpoint. I don't think I articulated my view very well.

I would appreciate if someone could sum up what Obama is doing wrong, as concisely as possible. Is it possible that the negatives are outweighed by the positive changes he is making, as these Christians believed?

Keep in mind, this person who doesn't know anything about American politics, or Obama, hates Obama, for admittedly no reason at all. That's some fantastic wingnuttery right there. (From Canada, no less!) "Please tell me why I should hate the man I already hate."

First off, are you living on this planet ? What has this guy done right ? Just one thing do you know ? I can't believe you are asking this question.

Well, uh, healthcare. Dialing down the rhetoric in the Middle East. Taking nuclear responses to nonnuclear provocation off the table. Those are good things.

Well I'm not American either, so I don't know the issues as intimately as others here. But some off the top of my head are:

1. Making Abortion more accessible

2. Over-ruling the Constitution to ram what he wants down the throats of the people

3. Refusing to produce a Birth Certificate and taking extreme lengths to hide it... he's a law breaker, to say the least.

4. Mocking the Bible, the Christian faith, and bullying Israel while reaching out to the Muslims.

That's just a starter list.....

None of those things. How has Obama made abortion more accessible? He has not. He has not overruled the Constitution, he has not refused to produce a birth certificate, nor has he mocked the bible or christians. He has not bullied Israel, though I wish he would. As for "reaching out to Muslims", yes, he did do that. There's 1 billion of them, and they live on the same planet we do. We need to make nice occasionally.

My apologies. I will just sum up Obama as short as I can , HE IS BAD NEWS . If I make a list of what this guy has done my blood pressure will go through the roof. I will let others explain the things this guy has done.

I, too, cannot answer the question, but my nonanswer will be in convincing RED CAPS.

He's done everything wrong. He basically just kicked this nation off a cliff, and it's currently plummeting towards the jagged rocks. We're just waiting for the gruesome death.

I can't answer the question, either, but I will use violent imagery to not answer your question.

3. He just came out and said the US will never use nukes, even if we are attacked by nukes, he will never respond in that way. In other words, please attack America, you will not be retaliated against.

4. He is a Marxist. He does not believe in the free market system. He is nationalizing every piece of our economy he can get his hands on.

5. He is a racist. In his book he speaks very badly of white people. His grandparents who raised him were white, and he said he hated that part of himself, and would separate himself from that part. He actually referred to his own grandmother as a "typical white person."

6. He is a liar. He said he sat in Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years but never heard the radical sermons that we have heard sound bites of......

7. He is anti-Israel. He supports Israel's enemies, not our ally, Israel. In fact, he bows down to Arab kings, but treats Netanyahu like a door mat.

Is this enough because there is much much more....

Then we're back to the racist meme, which is racist in and of itself. For as much as Obama is described as being "black", he's half white. His mother was white, his grandparents were white, he himself is as much white as he is black. Accusing Obama of being racist against white people is an attempt to make him TEh Scaree (entirely) Black Man Who Will Shank You All, Possibly In Da Hood.

#1 He diminishes Jesus Christ, and is embarrassed by the claims of God about His Son.

He secured 700+ billion dollars as a slush fund to "stimulate" the things he wants to "stimulate."

He secured a new federal entitlement program while ignoring all the other entitlement programs bankruptcy.

He cuts deals with "special" interests at the expense of the rest of us, like giving unions special deals on health care. A feat usually reserved by mutual silence because it is shameful, he now makes public, even righteous in his own eyes, and flaunts in the face of the people.

He "apologized" to the world for Americas 'folly', in his own eyes anyway.

He has let double digit unemployment hang around the necks of the people. Yes, it is entirely his responsibility, I give him no one iota of slack.

However, if you're arguing with your average European or socialist, I wouldn't even waste my breath.

The diminishment of Jesus I can only assume means being polite to Muslims. Yes, there was no stimulus in the Bush Administration. None at all. What entitlement programs are bankrupt? Guess I missed that. As for the unemployment, yes, the economy was fine under Bush. It collapsed the day Obama took office. Totally Obama's fault. Yes, indeedy.

The worst thing he has done above all else...

With all this said, either Obama is extremely ignorant of what the people of this country want, or he is very shrewd. He is stripping us of all rights and putting us in physical danger. He's controlling the media now and trying to remove our free speech. We have a dictator problem now and yet, we do nothing. Isn't there something we can do to stop this craziness?

He's ignorant of what the majority who elected him want? I doubt it. What rights has Obama stripped you of, and were you equally enraged when Bush stripped you of rights? Nobody needs to set you up to look bad, you guys do that just fine on your own. As for controlling the media- have you seen Fox and CNN? Have you had any trouble listening to Limbaugh? I didn't think so. As for what to do about "this craziness", I assume you've heard of voting?

I can't think of a more apropos description of the relationship between the tea partiers and the GOP, as demonstrated in this list of demands:

Monday's passing of health care reform is a good example of why you don't really want that. No Republicans voted for that bill, and it passed anyway. Also, "stand a fight to win" . . . wtf?

You must support the Constitution.You must support the Second Amendment.

I'm beginning to think you should have to pass a basic test in civics before you can vote. The Amendments to the Constitution are a part of the Constitution. Supporting the Constitution means supporting the Amendments to the Constitution- all of them.

You must support our military.You must support tax cuts.You must support cutting

Well, I suppose if you support tax cuts, you must necessarily support governmental cuts, but notice what he doesn't want cut- military spending. Military spending is significantly more of the budget than all social service programs combined. If you really wanted to cut government spending and be able to lower taxes, you'd cut military spending, not snatch food from the mouths of children. Of course, that assumes you like children more than guns, which I'm guessing Mr. Second Amendment does not.

You must support the death penalty.

It's So Hard for a White Man to Get Ahead

George Picard (-25,000,000 points for making me associate you with Sir Patrick Stewart) at American Thinker wrote a much needed article about how hard it is for the white man to get ahead in this new America, with its racist President.

The administration and Congress have passed policies clearly based on favoritism. They have further appointed, approved, and empowered key officials who have displayed a strong desire to benefit African-Americans over the interests of all Americans.

He never really addresses why Obama might do this, other than the implication that Obama is BLACK, so he hates whitey. You know, like his mother. And the grandparents who raised him. Also.

There are two ways this agenda has been promoted: steps that have a disparate impact in favor of African-Americans, and those that are designed to specifically favor African-Americans (disparate treatment).

Disparate impacts are outcomes that benefit African-Americans because they are compose a higher proportion of a particular group. These include:

efforts to gut the workfare requirement that was the signature achievement of Bill Clinton in the area of welfare reform;

giving a blank check to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Housing Authority to expand home "ownership" among lower-income people and income redistribution on a massive scale (via tax hikes and stimulus bills -- and by the way, stimulus views vary by race, with African-Americans far more in favor of it than whites, Hispanics, or Native Americans); and
health care "reform" (including expanding the ranks of those who qualify for Medicaid) despite all the polls showing that most Americans are happy with their own medical care and do not want the intrusion of government, the massive deficits, and the tax increases that will come with such "reform."

Because African-Americans make up a high proportion of the disadvantaged, they will disproportionally benefit. This is an agenda at work.

Don't believe me? Listen to Barack Obama when he spoke to a friendly crowd of minority journalists in 2008 about why he favored universal care:

If we have a program, for example, of universal health care, that will disproportionately affect people of color, because they're disproportionately uninsured.

That sound you hear? That's me, beating my head against my desk. According to Mr. Picard, it is racism to help the poor, because such a high percentage of the poor are minorities.

I don't even know what to say about that. Helping people get health care is racist, because the people without health care are overwhelmingly minorities? Whom else should we help? The people that don't need it? That doesn't even make sense.

Then What Am I Celebrating?

From what I understand, the White House is very busy with 17 "holiday parties" before the Obamas leave for their annual vacation in Hawaii. Did you know the Obamas don't celebrate Christmas? And that the Nativity Scene was almost banned from the White House this year?

This bothered me. At first, I scrolled by it on the reader after briefly skimming it. Then I returned to it, read it and moved on. I couldn't stop coming back to it, but I couldn't figure out why.

Apparently, if Obama doesn't want to put a nativity (religious scene) in the White House, he doesn't want to celebrate Christmas. The fact that he does, indeed, celebrate Christmas is irrelevant unless he celebrates Christmas exactly the way Barbara does.

Ignoring the inherent arrogance of proclaiming that you can decide the legitimacy of other people's holiday celebrations, which does bother me, I think what really bothers me is that by Barbara's definition, I do not celebrate Christmas.

First of all, if I'm not celebrating Christmas, what is it that I do every December 25th? What purpose does my Christmas tree serve, precisely, to what end do I display delightful light up deer? Why do I buy presents and wrap them with care? (I wrap presents with such precision that people feel bad opening them and ruining the wrapping. The secret is tape. Lots of it.) Why do I host and cook dinners and bake 8 different varieties of cookies? (The cherry ones are to die for, but the candy canes are my sentimental favorite.)

Secondly, it struck me that Christmas in this country (and probably all over the West) is like marriage in this country: the secular and the religious intwined in an uncomfortable union at best. Christmas traditionally has two sides to it: the secular gift giving and feasting elements, and the religious "O hai, teh savyur iz born" element. Trying to say that one half of that is more legitimate than the other is just silly. The religious element might be more important to you, but you leave my precisely wrapped presents and light up deer alone!

To say nothing of the fact that even if you remove the secular, Santa, presents-n-feasting elements from Christmas, you still have the problem of one religion's celebration being pasted over another religion's preexisting celebration. I think once early Christianity slapped the celebration of the birth of their savior over the pagan Solstice celebration, they lost the right to bitch and moan about secular celebrations occurring on the same date as Christmas. Hello, you already stole the holiday and half its traditions, you can't whinge if someone else does it to you!

So, yeah, I'm an atheist, and yeah I celebrate Christmas. And if you want my light up deer, you can pry them from my cold, dead hands.

Grab a Mop

In his remarks, the president explained his support for a two-party system, where "ideas are tested and assumptions are challenged." He added, "But what I reject is when some folks decide to sit on the sidelines and root for failure on health care or on energy or on our economy. What I reject is when some folks say we should go back to the past policies when it was those very same policies that got us into this mess in the first place.

"Another way of putting it is when, you know, I'm busy and Nancy's busy with our mop cleaning up somebody else's mess, we don't want somebody sitting back saying, 'You're not holding the mop the right way.' Why don't you grab a mop, why don't you help clean up? 'You're not mopping fast enough.' 'That's a socialist mop.' Grab a mop -- let's get to work."

You don't like my socialist mop? Fine. Clean up this mess with your capitalist mop. I don't care, just clean up the mess.

Seems obvious, right? Not over at Newsmax, where John L. Perry, who's apparently never heard of voting, wrote this (it was subsequently taken down):

There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic. [...]

Military intervention is what Obama’s exponentially accelerating agenda for “fundamental change” toward a Marxist state is inviting upon America. A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama’s radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible.

Unthinkable? Then think up an alternative, non-violent solution to the Obama problem. Just don’t shrug and say, “We can always worry about that later.”

That's right, Mr. Perry went with e) military coup, the hallmark of every democracy.

Mr. Perry, you seditious spleenweasel, I don't have to think up an alternative, nonviolent solution to your nonexistent problem. We already have one: voting. Why couldn't you think of it?

This, combined with the uptick in death threats against our President, combined with disturbing polls to determine under which circumstance we should assassinate our President, makes me a little . . . concerned.

I'm going to deal with this stupidity now, because I just know it's going to turn into a massively popular email forward very soon. You can read it for yourself, but basically, a legal secretary that used to work where Obama used to work accuses him of being a big meanie.

First of all, I would like to explain what working at a law office is like. First, the pecking order:

Clerical Staff
the Receptionist

Partners are gods, and get whatever they want, no matter how unreasonable it is. I once spent my entire lunch hour (which I don't get paid for, btw) scouring the mall for crystal salt and pepper shakers because my boss didn't like the plastic ones in the lunch room.

Associates are about a half-step above the clerical staff in the eyes of partners, though not in the eyes of associates. Associates get paid significantly more than the clerical staff, but trust me when I say to you that partners don't treat them with much more respect.

The clerical staff is lucky to be allowed time to pee. I come in early (unpaid), stay late (unpaid) and I think I've left for lunch on time twice in the last two years. That's just the way it is. I get blamed (and screamed at) for things that aren't my fault all the time. In fact, I frequently get screamed at for doing what the partner told me to do (after he realized it wasn't a good idea).

We're not allowed to leave work for doctor's appointments. Guess the last time I saw a doctor. The managing partner recently abolished personal days because he got sick of not knowing where people were. He once threatened to fire a woman while she was in the hospital because she was missing too much work. This was the first time she'd called out sick in 3 years.

Why do I stay? It's a job. Unemployment in my area is around 20%. I don't get paid much, but I do get more than I have or would anywhere else.

So I'm not taking too seriously some woman whining that Obama didn't demand, as a lowly associate, better pay and benefits for the clerical staff. The fact that her friend was frequently kept late doesn't strike me as odd, either. Republicans, in trying to defund Acorn, may accidentally end up defunding the entire military-industrial complex.

The congressional legislation intended to defund ACORN, passed with broad bipartisan support, is written so broadly that it applies to "any organization" that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things.

In other words, the bill could plausibly defund the entire military-industrial complex.

Whoops.

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) picked up on the legislative overreach and asked the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) to sift through its database to find which contractors might be caught in the ACORN net.

Lockheed Martin and Northrop Gumman both popped up quickly, with 20 fraud cases between them, and the longer list is a Who's Who of weapons manufacturers and defense contractors.

I have only one thing to say to this:

There's absolutely no racism in the opposition to Obama. None. So you can imagine my surprise when I learned that Rush Limbaugh wants to bring back segregation.

Do I need to explain exactly how wrong this statement is? And before you lecture me about "oh, don't pay attention to that old windbag, nobody else does", allow me to remind you that his show is carried on more than 600 domestic radio stations, and even conservative (not in the political sense) estimates of his audience are in the tens of millions.

I now have confirmation that the GOP is not in fact, a political party. It is performance art.

Representative Jack Kingston of Georgia is now criticizing Democrats for being too much like Republicans. Yes, he actually said that in his anticzar speech.

"I think we made a mistake as Republicans rubber-stamping too much from the Bush administration. In fact, if we had had a little more oversight and scrutiny of the administration's decisions when Bush was president we'd still be in the majority, probably. So I think that the Democrats are making a huge mistake here, and I can promise you the members who voted against this amendment, they will regret that."

Various Republicans added their own "thoughts" as to what Obama's czars are doing.

The more than a dozen House Republicans who joined Kingston's Wednesday-afternoon press conference offered a number of theories as to what the "czars" are up to. Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) compared the officials on his "czar" chart to those responsible for last year's Wall Street collapse. Rep. Pat Broun (R-Ga.) suggested that they are creating policy and law "counter to the Constitution." Either that, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) said, "or they're simply figureheads, at which point they're collecting a salary for doing no work for the taxpayers."

Oddly, none of these gentlemen had anything similar to say about Bush's czars, which included:

Not that long ago, my black-in-the-way-Obama-is-black nephew invited me to say the "n word" to him. Only he didn't say "n word". It's the first time in a long time I've been shocked. Not pearl-clutching "how ever could you say that!" shocked, but honestly-couldn't-think-for-a-second shocked.

It's not like I've been waiting with impatience for 33 years for permission to say that. In fact, I can't even think that word. In my head, in the privacy of my own thoughts, it's still the "n word". I might be able to say that word if someone held a gun to my head, but maybe not.

I guess I was just raised right.

Clearly, some other people, who were in DC on September 12th, were not.

Ghandi Is Offensive

To answer the question of just how fucking crazy Christians can get, Ghandi is now offensive. Yes, that Ghandi.

Apparently, sombody asked President Obama which person, dead or alive, he would like to have dinner with, and he answered Ghandi. “He’s somebody I find a lot of inspiration in. He inspired Dr. (Martin Luther) King. He ended up doing so much and changed the world just by the power of his ethics.”

Well, yeah, Ghandi. Okay. He might not eat much, but who doesn't want to meet Ghandi?

Apparently, people like Carlotta, for whom any answer other than Jesus is a slap to the face of Christians everywhere.

If that’s why he chose Gandhi, then what has Jesus done as far as he’s concerned? He only changed several nations of people by his mere words and miraculous wonders. He died and then raised himself from the dead! But step back Jesus because Gandhi was more impressive to Obama.

In less than a two week period, Obama has publicly embraced religious practices and/or persons who are complete contradictions to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He has made acceptable false teachers, prophets and teachings.

Okay. Just a better picture on the one who calls himself a Christian.

That's right. If you're a Christian, you can't have any respect or interest in anything or anyone other than Jesus. Einstein? Well, yeah, he discovered relativity, but fuck that shit, god made relativity! Beethoven? Wrote some good tunes, but it's god who made you capable of hearing them (and Beethoven incapable of hearing them. irony.)! Edward Jenner? Discovered vaccines, but it's god who gave you an immune system in the first place! In your face, Jenner!

Natural Law

It took me a minute, but I think "natural law" as discussed by Fred Hutchison, RenewAmerica "analyst" is the Ten Commandments, the idea being that every person everywhere automatically knows the Ten Commandments whether they know itor not. The article is a criticism of liberalism (we're blown about by the winds of popular fads) and Obama (he's the weathervane), but I thought I'd deal with one particular bit of silliness: the idea that everywhere and everywhen in the universe "thou shalt not steal" is held to be true.

In the early 20th century, the jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes was the most famous proponent of positive law. G. K. Chesterton and C. S. Lewis were very popular proponents of natural law.

Chesterton's fictional detective, Father Brown, was a like a Christian Sherlock Homes. He was on the trail of Flambeau, a criminal mastermind. Before Father Brown solved a case against Flambeau, he debated Flambeau about natural law versus positive law. Flambeau speculated that there are many worlds in the starry heavens and that each one has a different moral law. Father Brown replied that every one of those worlds has a mortar board, "Thou shalt not steal." In this way, Father Brown emphasized the universality of natural law and rejected cultural relativism. His terse comments rebuked Flambeau for being a thief. His comments also rebuked him for temporizing the immorality of his thefts by using the relativistic philosophy of positive law.

How would Father Brown know that? Has he been to every world in "the starry heavens" and asked? Or is he, like Chesterton, simply unable to imagine people who are not just like him?

It was hardly uncommon, several hundred years ago, to run into peoples in both the Americas and in Africa that did not have any notion of land being owned by any particular individual. Land was just land, if you wanted to use it, fine, but you couldn't own it. This led to trouble for the natives when the (Christian) Europeans moved in with their concepts of land ownership. Native leaders thought they were granting the Europeans limited use of the land, when in fact they were effectively destroying themselves.

It's not too hard to imagine a culture in which there is no notion of ownership at all, land or otherwise. I am wearing this sweater because I'm cold and it fits me and it looks nice with my outfit, but when I am done with it, someone else can wear it. I live in this house because it suits me, but I could live in another house, or someone else could live in this one. Father Brown knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this culture has never existed on earth or anywhere else in the entire universe? Really? How?

The idea of natural law is that the creator hardwires some things directly into our brains, we all know them whether we are ever taught them or not. If you've spent any time with small children, you know this isn't true. If a baby wants something, they grab it. They don't consider ownership, they have no concept of theft. It is the reaction of adults to their grabbing that teaches them that particular commandment.

Think about the implications of natural law. Why bother to raise your children? If natural law exists, you could lock your kids in a closet or drop them off in the woods for wolves to raise and they'd still grow up to be adults who don't steal, lie, have sex outside of marriage, worship false idols or take the name of the lord in vain.

Nobody actually thinks that, do they?

That's it. I used to think the US could be saved from itself, but a new Public Policy Polling poll has put an end to that:

One poll question indicative of how difficult it is to gain public understanding on a complicated issue asked if respondents thought the government should ‘stay out of Medicare,’ something inherently impossible. 39% said yes. that would be fucking impossible, because Medicare is a government run program. we may as well ask baseball players to stay out of MLB.

The poll also shows that an additional 15% of respondents were “not sure” if the government should be involved in Medicare. Only 46% of respondents disagreed with the proposition that the government should stay out of the government-run program. so, less than half of the population has the basic knowledge required for democracy to survive.

The poll also finds that only 62 percent of respondents believe that President Obama was born in America. Of the 38 percent who either don't believe or are unsure, some think he was born in Indonesia, Kenya, the Philippines, or France. Six percent of the total poll respondents also don't think Hawaii is a U.S. state.
