is that you find yourself arguing that a raped 9 year old must die in the attempt to carry twins to term.
A 9-year-old girl who was carrying twins, allegedly after being raped by her stepfather, underwent an abortion Wednesday despite complaints from Brazil's Roman Catholic church.
. . .
Fatima Maia, director of the public university hospital where the abortion was performed, said the 15-week-old pregnancy posed a serious risk to the 80-pound girl.
"She is very small. Her uterus doesn't have the ability to hold one, let alone two children," Maia told the Jornal do Brasil newspaper.
But Marcio Miranda, a lawyer for the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife in northeastern Brazil, said the girl should have carried the twins to term and had a cesarean section.
"It's the law of God: Do not kill. We consider this murder," Miranda said in comments reported by O Globo.
Forcing the 9 year old- let me repeat that- 9 year old to die in the attempt to carry the fetuses to term is not murder? How is that not murder? How is that NOT the most morally repugnant thing anyone has ever said? How could anyone say that and NOT be ashamed of themselves?
Honestly, what the fuck is wrong with some people?

Opposition to abortion has a "moderate negative correlation" with other lifey things, like opposition to the death penalty, working to reduce poverty, and pacifism. Indeed, a 1978 study called "Are Catholics Ready?" concluded that "the [anti-abortion] movement derives its most fundamental motivations less from a reverence for human life than from a concern for sexual morality." (sound familiar?) See Andrew H. Merton, Enemies of Choice: The Right-to-Life Movement and Its Threat to Abortion pp 189-90 or this post of mine.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm having difficulty seeing how not aborting the twins is pro-life. For the sake of the argument I'm about to make, I'll consider the fetuses to be persons. If the twins are aborted, two people die. If there is no abortion, the woman dies as well as the twins dependent on her. In this case, aborting the twins results in fewer deaths than not aborting them. Wouldn't this therefore be the "pro-life" course of action?
Also note that even if the pregnancy were carried to term, the mother's youth, small size and the presence of twins make it not very likely that either or both of the babies would have survived.
ReplyDeleteNote also that the Bishop has now excommunicated the mother of the victim and the doctors who were involved in the abortions.
these thingd, when thy come to light (as they seem to like every fucking week!) always make me (literally) ill.
ReplyDeleteand, please someone fucking tell me why is it that the FUCKER who had been RAPING THIS CHILD SINCE SHE WAS AGE 6 isn't excommunicated? why aren't ALL murderers (not just the ones who save the lives of children with the judicious application of medical science) excommunicated? if its murder, and murder is worthy of excommunication, then... but wait, MOST murders are NOT put into this category.
*screams in rage*
GODS i feel bad for that little girl, this just makes it WORSE, and now she will grow up thinking her Church really hates her, wanted her to die. this will probably totally ruin her relationship with her mother. and she will *always* blame herself for "her mother going to hell".......
There are a lot of really great ethical arguments to use against the pro-life movement, but unfortunately the response is generally to plug their ears and just say "LALALALALA SACREDNESS OF LIFE LALALALA".
ReplyDeleteThe most interesting thing to consider, in my opinion, is how even the most ardently pro-life of obstetricians won't blink when aborting a tubal pregnancy, because the fetus will never survive and would likely kill the mother. Of course, this rational is easily used on women privileged enough to be born in the US. 9 year old pregnant brown girls who would tragically die if forced to carry the child? Screw them, it makes for a good human interest story. *sigh*
This is really disgusting. And personal failure, I agree with your comment on the pro-life people basically being interested in punishing the 'sinful' activities of women, not the welfare of the actual child.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of the tubal pregnancy angle. Those are always ended if caught early enough, and nobody blinks, not even the religious right.
ReplyDeleteHmmm . . .
erm... i can't find it, it was at Feministe - Chile, i THINK, recently passed a law making abortion essentially universally illegal - to the point where doctors wouldn't give a woman an "abortion" for a TUBAL PREGNANCY. they TOLD her that's what it was. and then wouldn't treat her. so she went back to her villiage and multiple children, and tried the villiage midwifes method. which killed her.
ReplyDeleteshe would have died even WITHOUT the midwife's help, but still... and the very fucked up thing? fixing a tubal pregnancy IS legal in Chile (if it's really Chile. i'm not 100%)
seriously, i am still enraged. granted that part is personal due to my personal history, but most of it? the utter FUCKED-UPEDNESS of the whole fucking thing! when a doctor says "this uterus canNOT support even one child, one child will kill her, two will do it faster" you don't get to sit there and say "but a Caesarian!" which would happen TOO LATE to save ANY of the lives. ok, i'm just ranting, and repeating what everyone has said. done. sigh
